The Whitby Public Library was excited to participate in the Rotary Club of Whitby Sunriseā€™s community event "Push for a change" held on October 21, 2016.  The Push for a Change is an initiative started by Joe Roberts, a former homeless youth turned successful business person, to help raise awareness of youth homelessness in Canada.  Joe Roberts made his way through Durham Region stopping at Celebration Square in Whitby for a well attended and spirited community gathering.

A Push for Change

Participants enjoyed a variety of activities, food and live entertainment, and donated non-perishable food items for our local food banks.

Durham Region Rotary Clubs came together and presented Joe with a $10,000 cheque for The Push For Change initiative.

To put perspective around youth homelessness, the library hosted a sleep-in at the Central Branch.  Unlike youth living on the street, this sleep in came with activities such as a storytime, feature film and crafts.

Joe Roberts said "Thank you to The Rotary Club of Whitby Sunrise for mobalizing this community spirit.  I felt like a hero walking through Durham and when I arrived at Celebration Square - WOW - what a reception."

Joe is pushing a shopping cart across Canada to raise awareness and funds for youth homelessness.  His story is compelling, his message touches the heart. Follow his adventure at www.thpushforchange.com or on facebook @pushforchange
